India top in mobile phone sales survey
India posted the world's largest sales of mobile phones to end users in the third quarter, helping the Asian market expand 26 percent, a global survey showed.
Sales of mobile phones using both CDMA and GSM technologies reached 24.5 million units during the three months ended September in the world's second-most populous nation, said the survey by market research firm Gartner.
That came out of overall mobile phone sales of 101.8 million units in the Asia-Pacific region."
India's performance was driven by CDMA phones and fierce competition among operators of GSM networks, which stimulated sales of replacement phones and allowed operators to penetrate rural areas quickly," Gartner analyst Ann Liang (???) said in a statement yesterday.

The number of Indian mobile phone subscribers passed the 200 million mark in August after another eight million customers were added that month, according to figures from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.

The government is aiming for more than half a billion mobile phone subscribers by 2010.

BSNL has launched new FMS service for family and friends
BSNL has launched a new SMS Collect service where a sender BSNL suscriber can send message for Free and receiver receives the message and also replies back - all at a cost of Re.1 in the same circle and Rs.2 in case of inter circle. The service is useful in situations like earning parents paying for messages coming from their children or elders in the family who have limited budget or Employers may pay for receiving important messages from employees. Companies may extend these services to customers for whom the SMS could be free. This will also allow a BSNL subscriber to send a message to a close BSNL subscriber even at zero balance situation.

Samsung launches its first open market CDMA phone - Samsung MAX
Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a global leader in the mobile phone industry, announced the launch of its first open market phone in the CDMA segment, Samsung MAX.

The sleek slider Samsung Max is launched through company’s own distribution network and will be available to both Tata Indicom and Reliance Mobile subscribers. Until now Samsung offered CDMA phones exclusively on either Tata Indicom or Reliance Mobile Networks.

Samsung Max is complete multimedia phone localized to suit Indian needs. Some of the key Indian features are Indian Calendar, Panchang, Mobile Prayer, Cricket Scorer, and Hinglish SMS.
